The Journey of Awakening

“I think… if it is true that
there are as many minds as there
are heads, then there are as many
kinds of love as there are hearts.”
~Leo Tolstoy~

It’s important to find your unique way of connecting to the Divine. Spiritual teachings and writings are simply pointers that may be utilized to correct your course from time to time, but until you discover your own truth and live from a level of authentic experience, those ideas may actually hinder you from going deeper and finding your own way of being in the world.

Older souls have a tendency to explore many different belief systems and teachings, ultimately blending the aspects with which they resonate in order to create a unique perception. This perception creates the foundation used to experience the grand adventure of awakening. Keep in mind that it’s wonderful to explore new levels of awareness. And always, always… look within. Personal strength comes from inner knowing.

You have your own dreams to fulfill and your own journey to walk. Spiritual awakening is a constant movement of energy – releasing the old, allowing room for the new and discovering the clarity which comes from setting down your burdens.

Your Role in the World

“It’s no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”
~Jiddu Krishnamurti~

We are all deeply connected. This planet offers a playground of experience and it doesn’t really matter what you choose to believe. Humans tend to adopt ego-driven ideas and then fight to the death to defend them. Contrasting beliefs are a distraction that pull us into conflict with one another. The only thing that ultimately matters is your level of consciousness.

Our role, as souls seeking to awaken, is to do our own work, to rise above the minutia of the mind, free ourselves from limiting beliefs, heal our wounds (both personal and collective) and hold space for those around us so that they can do the same.

Before you speak, ask yourself if what you want to say is loving, beneficial or supportive. Always focus on what you’d like to create rather than what you perceive as wrong. Conscious adjustments in our words and thoughts can initiate transformative energy with laser-like focus.

So, simply pay attention to what you put out into the world. Are you adding to imbalance, anger and dysfunction through reactivity or can you rise above? Your willingness to take ownership of your own state of consciousness allows your light to shine like a beacon in the darkness. You are an inspiration to those who cross your path. Begin Now.

Loving-Kindness Meditation

Loving-Kindness Meditation
(from the book Beyond Happiness by Ezra Bayda)

Using conscious breath, draw your attention to the present moment. Think of someone you have positive feelings for and breathe them in to the heart chakra. This activates your innate loving-kindness. As you continue with slow, conscious breaths stay with each line below for a few breaths each. Visualize radiant energy expanding outward…

To Oneself
Breathing in, dwelling in the heart.
Breathing out, extending loving-kindness to myself, exactly as I am right now.

Breathing in, dwelling in the heart.
Breathing out, there’s no one special to be.

Breathing in, dwelling in the heart.
Breathing out, just being.

To Another
Breathing (name) in,
May you dwell in the heart.

Breathing (name) in,
May you be healed in your difficulties.

Breathing (name) in,
May your heart be open to others.

To Everyone
Breathing everyone in,
May you dwell in the heart.

Breathing everyone in,
May you be healed in your difficulties.

Breathing everyone in,
May your hearts be open to others.

Breathing in, dwelling in the heart.

Nurturing the art of loving-kindness cultivates a foundation of peaceful contentment. You can walk through the world in a way that is empowered and healthy, and this simple mediation is just one way to consciously align yourself with the Now. Realize on the deepest level that you are a channel through which limitless love can flow.

Love is the Absence of Judgment

Love and judgment cannot coexist in the same space. In our spiritual work, everything offers an opportunity to awaken; therefore, it’s imperative to release all resistance.

Judgment, whether directed at others or internalized, is a rejection of what is. It creates a filter that blocks us from experiencing love and balance and adds additional layers of conflict into our life situation.

To truly awaken, we must be willing to experience oneness in a world of difference. When we allow love to guide our interactions, it helps us see beyond the mechanisms of the ego to the commonality that connects us to one another.

What are your most cherished beliefs? These are often the very things we need to examine the most. If resistance arises around changing a viewpoint or expectation, then change is typically what is required. Love yourself enough to open to the power of transformation.

The Awakened Life

Like water eroding rock, the awakened life is one of gentle, consistent, conscious actions that leave a permanent impression. Attempting to force change, whether in yourself or others around you, is akin to a flash flood that temporarily wreaks havoc and leaves destruction in its wake. Living your truth; however, is a series of small actions that can transform even the most challenging of situations.
Everything plays a role in your awakening. Recognizing your judgments and understanding the fears out of which they arise allows you to consciously choose responses that bring peace to your life situation. Uncertainty is another path that ultimately opens the door to new ideas and insight. Anger points the way to repressed energy. Rather than wondering “why?” when things go wrong, seek understanding through direct experience rather than wandering aimlessly in an intellectual playground.
The key is to accept what is. Bring a greater awareness to how you choose to experience the present moment. When you take responsibility for your own state of consciousness, your actions will reflect empowerment and kindness.

Love Who You Are

Live as if you had purposely chosen every aspect of your life. All of your experiences have set the stage for your awakening.

Far too many people carry the energy of self-hatred which creates a filter that warps all that they see. This is self induced torture. Unfortunately, this energy is compounded by the outward projection of hatred and judgment of others, often triggering others to return it in kind, and a loop of entrapment is created.
Self love, conversely, brings out laughter and the joy of being. It celebrates. It’s silly. It’s innocent and free and expansive. We purposely arranged every aspect of our life experience in order to facilitate the quickest spiritual awakening possible; therefore, embrace your quirkiness, for it is sacred.
What would life be like if there was nothing to complain about? How would you use all the excess energy that is no longer being wasted? There are no limitations. Observe how self-love and celebration transform the present moment. You are a spark of eternity having a unique physical experience. Celebrate it! We’ll be off on a new adventure soon enough.

Inner Peace

Peace is inner joy, tranquility, nonjudgmental love and universal compassion.
~Debasish Mridha~
Life happens. The stillness of infinite potential resides beneath egoic judgments and interpretation of the world around us. As we release the need to create a running commentary of opinion, we discover the ability to consciously choose how to respond in alignment with our soul’s purpose rather than distracting from it.

You are here to awaken. Everything that you choose to do and all that unfolds in your experience simply provides the playground in which you explore. See how accepting and neutral you can remain within polarizing situations. Eventually, this sense of peace will become the bedrock of your life.

More and more you may notice yourself in the role of observer – untainted by reactivity and at ease within the present moment. When you do choose to take action, your approach will be clear and empowered. Awareness calls upon us to be consistently mindful. As you awaken, your movement through the world takes on a new quality.

Challenges provide an opportunity to rise above. How else will you cultivate and strengthen your best qualities? Honor those who play roles in the development of your emerging strength and self-mastery. Those who challenge you the most on the physical plane, love you the most on the spiritual plane. These amazing souls have agreed to assist your souls evolution and play their part to perfection.

Self-Knowledge

“The more you know yourself, the more clarity there is. Self-knowledge has no end – you don’t come to an achievement, you don’t come to a conclusion. It is an endless river.”
~Jiddu Krishnamurti~
The challenges that we face ultimately bring out the best in us. Through trial and error we learn to face our shadows and incrementally awaken. This is a never-ending process. The journey is not only long, but vast as we wander the playground of experience.
The point of power is always in the present moment. When we can consciously approach the Now with a sense of awareness and balance, we can trust that the future will tend to itself. Seeing yourself clearly, it becomes possible to combine the wisdom borne of experience with self-awareness and transcend the mundane. No one can walk this journey for you, it is personal and unique.
Everything offers an opportunity to awaken. Look into yourself with love and patience and know that there will be times when you miss the mark and others when you shine with the brilliance of a thousand suns. Trust the processes of your awakening. There is far more to life than meets the eye.

Experience Love

“What you will see is love coming out of the trees, love coming out of the sky, love coming out of the light. You will perceive love from everything around you. This is the state of bliss.”
~Don Miguel Ruiz~
Our purpose is to awaken and everything in our experience supports this endeavor. Through the process of healing the wounds of the past, we drop limiting beliefs and rediscover Oneness. We learn to see through the drama and ego-driven roles of this world to the infinite energy that connects us.
Should you find yourself getting lost within the stories of the mind, go outside and listen to the birds sing. Immerse yourself deeply within the present moment and you will discover that you cannot listen and think simultaneously. This simple act redirects your energy away from past and future and into the Now.
As we become more aware, the world around us is transformed. Though nothing has changed, our perception expands and we are able to see more clearly. Challenges become vibrant aspects of empowerment. Contrast reveals the evolving dance of opposites. Practice recognizing the Divine in everyone with whom you interact. As you discover sacredness within yourself, you’ll see it everywhere.

Stillness

“Go deeply into the urge to be silent and not the mental interference of how, where and when. If you follow silence to its source you can be taken by it in a moment.”
~Jean Klein~
This moment contains infinite seeds of possibility. When we remember to pause, breathe, immerse and receive, we draw inward and connect with the Now in a way that heals the soul. Cultivating the ability to find peace in the midst of chaos brings grace to our life situations, no matter how challenging they may be.
In the stillness we can remember our true purpose. In the stillness we can send out waves of loving energy. In the stillness we can become one with everything.
The point of power is in the present moment. Seek out that which nurtures your soul and give yourself the gift of connection. Your consciousness seeks to expand and anything in your experience can be transformed into a powerful aspect of your awakening.
You have the ability to rise above the mind and experience freedom. As you become more proficient at creating moments of stillness, life will reflect this peaceful energy throughout your varied interactions.
