Part of our collective learning comes through the interplay of opposites. No matter what your soul chooses to experience, this world provides the backdrop. By the end of the earth-portion of our adventure, we will have experienced every type of situation possible. Old souls, after many lifetimes, have greater compassion because they have navigated through both sides of every type of challenge. This empathy is often ridiculed by younger souls simply because of their lack of well-rounded experience.
Michael, The Basic Teachings (Christenaan, Van Hulle, Clark) lists the various types of karma every soul will ultimately explore:

The end result of our foray into the illusion of separation is that, paradoxically, we discover Oneness. Through shared experiences, we cultivate compassion for those still lost in the drama. We lead by example and hold space while honoring each path as sacred. The only difference between us is where we are in that process. When we drop judgment, we discover that Love resides at the core of everything.
