The Potential Within

The Day Life Hit Me Over the Head

When I first began consciously clearing old wounds, I discovered a small one that added surprising frustration to my days. My earliest childhood programming included deep embarrassment around being late, so I became punctual, prepared, and reliable.

In my late twenties, I met and eventually married my sweetie, who carried no such concern. He was easygoing about time, while I believed being punctual was clearly the “right” way to move through life. Naturally, I tried to hurry him along.

This became a persistent thorn in our otherwise easy relationship. Then came the day we were rushing to catch a flight. He was moving quickly through the airport parking lot, and I was falling farther behind, fuming as an entire story gathered momentum inside me.

Suddenly, something hit me in the head.

I looked up, confused, just as a wooden parking arm came down again and knocked me to the ground. I landed hard, and for one ridiculous moment it felt as though I had fallen into a Warner Bros. cartoon, complete with imaginary birds and stars circling my head.

Eventually, my sweetie realized I was no longer behind him and came back to investigate. We missed the flight, of course, and once I recovered, all I could do was laugh. Apparently, my guides truly did need to hit me over the head to interrupt the story I had created.

The next time he was running late, I made a different choice. I got ready, told him I would be outside reading, and settled into a good book. I stopped checking the clock, stopped offering reminders, and allowed the moment to be exactly as it was.

We arrived on time that day. And the next. And the next.

My inner shift had become genuine, so the lesson no longer needed to appear in the same form. His soul had been helping me release an old pattern and discover greater peace.

Life often gives us precisely the contrast we need. As we change within, our experience of the world begins to reflect that change to us.
