Raised as an evangelical Christian, I struggled through childhood with limiting beliefs, judgment, and a complicated relationship with my father. As I sought healing, I decided to try hypnosis, asking the therapist to take me to the beginning of my challenges with him. I expected some repressed memory from childhood.
Instead, I found experiencing a vision of a past life: different time, different country, same exact conflict. Something in me shifted instantly. I couldn’t claim complete understanding of what I was seeing, but my soul responded with a vibrant “yes!” and my search began.
One of my first playgrounds of discovery was the Michael Teachings. Within that framework, I began exploring the idea of soul contracts and the possibility that we choose certain relationships and circumstances because they offer fertile ground for the lessons we’re ready to encounter.
Looking back, I can see one of my strongest childhood imprints clearly: judgment. I became much like my father—opinionated, certain, even smug at times—while simultaneously carrying tremendous guilt because my religious upbringing taught me there was a correct way to think, believe, and behave. I judged others, judged myself for judging others, and created quite the spiritual hall of mirrors.
Over time, understanding these patterns helped move me from victimhood into empowerment. Choosing a difficult relationship doesn’t mean every action within that relationship is acceptable or predetermined. Free will still matters. Accountability still matters. Healing still matters.
Perhaps we choose the classroom, while everyone within it remains free to decide how they will behave.
The wounded healer is a familiar archetype for a reason. Those who encounter intense challenges may discover extraordinary opportunities for growth, compassion, and wisdom—and often feel called to offer what they’ve learned in service to others.
