The Potential Within

Preferences and Desire

There is nothing wrong with having preferences. In truth, they are part of being wonderfully human. We naturally prefer kindness over conflict, sunshine over storms, good health over illness, and hearing from someone we love rather than wondering why they haven’t replied. Preferences help shape the lives we are creating.

The invitation is simply to notice when a preference quietly transforms into a requirement.

Perhaps you send a heartfelt text and hope for a response. At first, there is openness. Then the minutes pass. You check your phone again. And again. Soon, your peace has become dependent upon someone else’s timing. Nothing outside has changed, yet your inner world has become unsettled.

Or maybe you’ve planned a gathering outdoors. You picture blue skies, warm laughter, and the perfect afternoon. When the forecast changes, disappointment is natural. Yet if your happiness depends entirely on the weather cooperating, you’ve unknowingly handed your well-being over to the clouds.

Life is constantly inviting us to participate without trying to control the outcome.

This doesn’t imply we must become passive or pretend we don’t care. We still plant gardens, pursue meaningful work, speak our truth, and set intentions with our whole heart. We simply learn to hold those intentions gently, allowing life enough space to respond in ways we may never have imagined.

Ironically, this openness often makes us more effective creators. A clenched fist cannot receive. Open hands can both offer and accept.

The spiritual practice is beautifully simple. Notice one expectation you’ve been carrying. A delayed message. A conversation you hope will go a certain way. A plan that must unfold according to your script. Then, with a gentle breath, loosen your grip just enough to whisper, This is my preference… but I trust life more than my expectations.

Peace rarely arrives because life finally does what we asked.

It arrives when we discover that our freedom was never dependent upon the outcome.

✨Blessing✨
May your heart know the joy of choosing without clinging.
May your hands remain open enough to both offer your dreams and receive life’s unexpected gifts.
May you discover the quiet freedom that has been waiting beyond every expectation.
