Happiness is a state of mind

Happiness is a choice, so is unhappiness.

“Inconsolable suffering can console us by making us feel special. But this feeling of special-ness diverts us from true freedom.”
~Ezra Bayda~

In his book, Beyond Happiness, Ezra Bayda teaches how to reach true contentment and that choosing to bring a sense of presence and awareness to the present moment can remove what seems to block us from happiness.

Utilize these three questions throughout all of your life situations, whether mundane or intense, and observe what arises.

  1. Am I truly happy right now?
  2. What blocks happiness?
  3. Can I surrender to what is?
Unhappiness can range from subtle dissatisfaction to outright anger. It’s important to periodically bring awareness to the Now in order to wake us from the world of illusion. Sometimes it can be challenging to determine what is truly causing anger to arise – the mind may want to say, “I don’t know” or shift into blame. Attempt to break through this by recording your thoughts or using a journal to see what patterns emerge. Surrender is not apathy or resignation; rather, it is an empowered decision to drop resistance. You have the ability to choose happiness Now.

Post these three questions where you’ll see them often – at work, in the car, around the house – and use the moments of your life as conscious spiritual practice.

Today my intention is to be content.
